The big difference in the 2nd and the 3rd in noise is the engine itself. So the removal of the cat and the muffler simply makes the exhaust louder. And, yes, it is louder. But I really like the way it sounds. And you can control it somewhat by how you drive.
I also have a '98 12valve. It originally had the 3" exhaust. I straight piped it and it wasn't loud enough for me so I converted the exhaust to a 4" MVRP exhaust, minus the muffler. This helped, but compared to my '06, the 12v is still quieter in the exhaust, while louder in engine noise. If I were you, I would go to the MVRP without the muffler on your 24v. I think you would be happy with it.
The Dynatrac conversion was really pretty simple and straightforward. Biggest problem was getting some of the original parts separated. They were bare metal from the factory, and stuck pretty bad from rust and corrosion. Putting things back together, we were able to seal the new parts better to prevent this happening again.
