We as a species are at our intellectual best when we're trying to figure out how to destroy each other. I believe war to be an evolutionary mechanism . It advances science and widens the gene pool amongst other things. Ultimately it is in our best interest to have a bit of a dust-up now and again.
As for the Germans, I think they just got carried away and the next thing they knew, there they were in Paris. ;-)
