The thickness shouldn't matter too much. As I remember, the 12723 seal sat way down in the bore. There was plenty of room for a thicker seal.
Also, the shaft out of the box does not see much rotation like a pto shaft, so getting it anchored in place is not as difficult.
I thought of using shim stock (old feeler gauge pieces may work) and RTV silicone. I don't know how much of a gap wraps of Teflon tape can be counted on to seal.
