You mentioned it has been 49 years of ups and downs. I think all lasting marriages are that way. You have days of happy, and days of sad, and days of passion, excitement, amazement, annoyance, and frustration. You have some honest moments. You have moments of tenderness. And you have a few moments of suspense, wondering whether she will pick up her skillet and make your favorite meal, or whether she will pick it up and hit you in the head with it.
It's a rare and fine thing to find someone who will stay with us forever, enduring the ups and downs. It’s even more rare to find someone who will accept us the way we are. Someone who will forgive our forgetfulness, our indecision, our mood swings and whatever else.
I can only imagine the pain you are feeling. At times like this, optimistic grieving is the only good answer. You seem to be doing that.
