I've been washing my greasy duds in ammonia, seems to lighten up the grime a little bit every time through the machine.
But the worst I ever did wash get soaked in 40 year old gear oil. I didn't wash the clothes, left them in my closet in case I had to do it again. Things worked out OK, so I tossed them in the washing machine. Lots of soap, and a couple cups of bleach. I guess I got lucky with the bleach, just enough to get every last 'Chanel #140' out, and didn't lighten the jeans one bit.
