Given the differing opinion and specs on the valve adjustment, I'm thinking that the seat-of-the-pants rule is to adjust for quiet tappets in a car engine, and set them on the loose and clattery side for industrial engines just to be sure they don't tighten up too much when they expand under heavy load. For best valve life, it's better to have the valves a little loose and noisy than to tight and have them leak and quickly burn.

The manual I was referring to shows pictures of the regular and sodium-filled valves so you can tell the difference, but it's hard to explain in words. The sodium-filled valve appears to be a little larger diameter, with a necked-down portion at the end so that it presumably uses the same retainer as the regular one.
