I wasn't much older than that when I ran my honda car out of oil, seized up the top end, sold it to some Russians for $350 and ate the loss. Of course it was my loss, not my parents' loss, since I had bought the car myself, and I learned an expensive lesson -- after you have the engine out, be sure that when you put it back in you remember to hook up the oil pressure wire.
The parent of that ditzy girl should have stayed on the title as legal owners, and put the daughter on as registered owner. If she's such an air-head (I won't say blond), she wouldn't even know the difference, and it would protect the parents against this sort of foolishness while keeping the ditz 100% liable for any legal problems.
