The giant wedge was intended to fit the earlier slanted firewalls. The wedge caused the heater to sit level against those. That heater used on later vehicles - like our Power-Wagons, would not normally need that wedge as the heater will sit level without it against a vertical firewall. However, it is good to have that space between the firewall and heater that the wedge provides.
