I agree with Mr. Sherman. The possibility of theft is a strong deterrent to carrying a rifle in your vehicle these days.

However, if you choose to go forward with your idea, you might want to search for an M1 Garand scabbard. They are a leather scabbard with two straps that attach to the Jeep/M37. Reproductions are available for less than $100.00

I have an original that is stamped U.S. Boyt 42, but I could never part with it as it belonged to my departed father.
