Tim, the guy I bought a '71 D300 from tried to start with the battery in it--not--so, he said he knew it was good but needed a little running time. That being said, he could not find his jumper cables so, he put a newer battery in it, fired it up, and while it was still running, switched back to the original. I drove it home and sure enough it would re-start the next day. Day two a little slower, and day three not. 'Jumped it off and checked voltage--10 volts!
Researching, I found that running one without the battery instantly cooks the VR.
Good part of story: New ones are cheap.
