My oil guy agreed with that, but 5 gallons of 50 wt motor oil cost the same as 5 gallons of 90 wt GL-1 gear oil, so there was no advantage. If I found a barrel of 90 wt gear oil at a yard sale for $20 like I did with the 85/140 GL-4, I would definitely use it.
