as clint mentioned most of the hardware that required plating was cadmium plated.
during the 70's zinc plating was introduced as a less toxic replacement for cadmium. while zinc looks the same as cad and is less toxic it is not as durable. when re-plating the build up is usually in the .0002-.0005 thickness range and works well when doing fasteners. when i do the split rings to look original i zinc plate and then put a clear enamel over top to increase durability. unfortunately for the average person it is very cost prohibitive to have this done. a good silver/gray is the most economical way to refinish. there are still a few shops doing cad work and most of it is military [the same entity that says we cant use it]. the last time i had a set of rings quoted for cad locally i was quoted 150.00 for the 4 rings if they were clean.
