To answer your questions;
1. I use a straight edge and plasma for all cuts. My Oxy/fuel gas is only used for heating etc.
2. Regarding the fender you mention. Both sections were butt jointed.
3. No damp rags or water. I do a short weld, then skip a distance away from the present weld. I keep this skipping back and forth to control heating the panel.
4. keep in mind that even grinding the welds can produce enough heat to cause a warp. Skip around when grinding also. Always let things cool down.
