Gary, the replacement rod is ready to use. You may want to file or scrape any casting flashing that may be protruding on the dipper/rod cap. The clearance will be in the crank so the shop that ground it for you should have checked all of that. Old Kohler motors are awesome. They don't make them like that anymore.
