Any chance it could have jumped time or the distributor drive gear is stripped and barely engaging? It's sounding a bit like the problem I had with a slant 6 this summer. I pulled the center wire from the distributor, and got a spark out of it so I figured all was well there, but it turned out the distributor gear was stripped at one spot, and the shaft was moving up and down too much so it was possible for it to turn a couple times while cranking and then stop.
