Before you call out to vintage, check locally for your parts. Thirlby or NAPA may have them in stock, or be able to get them next day for the same price or less than VPW.
I do not know what to tell you about not starting. If you have fuel, spark and compression, it should run. You said the starter kicks out at the first pop, maybe the starter bendix is worn and kicking out too quickly?
