It would be an eye openner for 99% of the car drivers to learn what skills it takes to operate a big vehicle and the maneuvering limitations that such a truck has.
I have been cut off while driving a 20,000lbs dump to the point where I could not see the rear half of the car.
The first time it happenned, I scrambled to hit the brakes and down shift at the same time. As I did this, the load shifted forward, and when I hit the clutch I also, without wanting to, caught the floor mounted hi-beam botton. This aggrivated the Mercedes Benz driver and he hit his brakes. He had no idea that I was having a difficult time trying not to run him over. And to think, if I did run him over, it would be my fault becuase I hit him in the rear. I have no idea how many passengers lives he put in harms way.
The second time, a mother put her pre-teen daughters life at risk by doing the same thing. After exiting the hyway and meeting up with her at a red light, I told her what carnage she could have cause and she looked as if she did not care.
We now have graduating drivers licences here in N.J. It is a start, but I still feel reality education is needed.
Some time ago, I sent these ideas to a writer of a large newspaper. He deals only with driving related stories.
Please post any other ideas to help educate.
I will pass them on and you never know, Reality Education maybe someday become a REALITY.
