As I tear down my 318 for freshening up, I've come across a bit of a problem.
My motor is a mix of various years. The crank is circa 1967, as it is a steel crank. It has the proper dampner, which is thicker than the one for a cast crank.
The problem is, I cannot get any pulleys to line up with it, as i'm using the 72-on timing cover so the water pump inlet is on the lower passenger side.
The obvious solution would be to put on a cast crank dampner.
One book I have says all the 318 dampners are interchangable, despite thickness. The other book says no, the forged crank MUST use the forged crank thick dampner.
Which is correct?
