I have a 96 1 ton Dodge work van with the 5.9 automatic overdrive with 4:10 gears. It is the fastest van I have ever driven. It is constantly over loaded. The ONLY Thing I like about this van is the drivetrain. The body, since it has no frame has a lot of flex to it. I have 77000 miles on it, it gets 11 mpg ( I drive with a lead foot) I have towed about 4000 lbs with it. I wish Dodge made a box truck like f@*d and ch#vy does. I need to buy a box truck soon and want the diesel. I also have a 99 Dodge 2500 diesel 4 by 4 with the 5 speed and 3:54 gears I tow my 46 WDX and other vehicles. It seems like I could tow anything with it. it gets about 17mpg. I got 12mpg on a trip but that was at about 70mph most of the way.
If your only towing something occassionally the 5.9 will be ok. but you would be happiier with the diesel.
