An M42 is a regular M37 fitted with an accessory kit to turn it into a Command Truck, meaning its job was to house radio equipment.

Some came this way from the factory, others were modified by the military.

The kit consisted of additional side curtains that had windows to help illuminate the bed. The normal cargo top could roll over the window panels to protect them and serve as a blackout curtain. The end curtain zipped up the middle, and extended down over the entire tailgate. This made it easier to get in and out, and provided a little more weather protection, important for the comfort of the radio operator but also to help protect the radio gear. A table was also included in the kit. Most, but not all, M42's had the 100 amp alternator kit from the factory or and upgrade was done. The M42 came with or without a winch. The standard canvas cab top was used. The kit came with M42 data plates for the dash.

Here a photo of an M42 with the cargo canvas rolled up, showing the add on side curtain with windows.
