I have a '73 PW that did the same thing for several years before I finally found the source of the problem. I tried all kinds of batteries, alternators, voltage regulators, etc. but none of those things made any difference. I even checked for a voltage drop between the battery and the headlights but everything seemed fine. Then one day the electrical system went completely dead. The problem turned out to be a corroded wire connection at the firewall bulkhead connector. There are several wires in that connector. The one to look for is the large wire that comes from the alternator. I fixed that and now have what seems like aircraft landing lights after what I had become accustomed to.
