Mark,
There is virtually no physical difference between the WW2 Braden MU2 which was rated at 5,000lbs and the later Braden MU2 rated at 10,000lbs. Braden simply rated them more conservatively during the war. In later years they increased the size of the shear pin and spec'd larger cable, and that was the only change. This is not speculation on my part. I was told this by an engineer who was part of the evolution of the MU2.
I have seen winches that are copies of the MU2, which originated overseas. They are duplicates right down to the input shaft angling into the gear case. I believe the shifter levers will interchange with the Bradens, but that is speculation. I have seen several of these copies on WM300's, and they fit up quite well, which has led to speculation that they might be 10,000lb versions of the MU2.
As far as I know these copies do not have any identifying marks or numbers cast into their parts, as opposed to the Bradens which have their name in cast into the bull gear cover, and part numbers cast into various parts. The copies were marketed under the name Rhino at one point, and maybe under other names as well. They are still manufactured today.
I'd be curious to see pictures of what you have. Greg
