This weekend I disassembled and cleaned the internals of my '49 flatfender's PTO. (I've just finished rebuilding the tranny and thought I should at least look at the condition of the PTO.) I followed the 3/4-ton WWII manual which applies to my tranny and PTO. It calls for removal of the PTO countershaft and cluster gear by use of a hammer and brass drift. Everything came apart fine, but when I went to re-install the countershaft I began driving it back in (as called for in the manual) and the PTO housing split out of the hole where the shaft enters the housing!
Now I'm looking for another housing, but VPW says these housings and PTO's are hard to come by. They have NOS PTO's for the WWII 3/4-ton, but these don't have the stub shaft in the rear. Even though it's not likely that I'll ever use the rear stub shaft to drive auxiliary equipment, I would still like to have that option on my truck.
Does anyone have a housing I can purchase, or know where I can get one? I might even consider a whole NOS PTO with rear stub shaft, if one were available. The internal parts from mine showed some wear, but considering how infrequently I would be using the PTO, I believe it would be just fine.
I might consider using my stub shaft in the WWII PTO, if such a mod could be made. Does anyone know?
Has anyone had this problem with a PTO housing? In the future, I guess I'll heat up the housing to about 300 degrees in the oven, while the countershaft cools in the freezer. Then I'll quickly assemble them.
Sorry for the long post. I know I sometimes get long-winded.
Thanks for any help.
Matt
