I've got a 78 W150 with a 360. It has been having problems firing for a while. I could move the harness around and it would eventually fire up. I thought it was in the engine harness and I bought a new one. After replacing it I discovered that my truck had a 79 harness on it. The new harness did not have the connector for the starter relay. Luckily I had a used harness I took off of a parts truck. It still won't run. I have a spark at the spark plug wires. I've checked everything according to a haynes manual I have for it. resistance checks at the coil, pick-up coil (distributer) and the electronic control module all check good according to the manual. Also the resistor checks good. When the 5 plug connector is unplugged from the ECU it has 12 volts at the coil but when I plug it back in the voltage goes to 6 volts. Is this normal? I think the wiring is ok. I've checked for opens and shorts to groud and have found none. I have also swapped the starter relay, resistor, ECU and voltage regulator from the parts truck (this truck was running prior to my getting it, the engine was removed). Any Ideas? Also I can't remember how the field connectors at the alternator go on. left to right I have the green wire then the red wire, Is this correct?
