MicroSoft Internet Explorer published a warning about a program being transmitted through the internet that corrupts the internet software operating systems. It was a second level article on the news paper format of the browser main page. I read it and went on with the "it can't happen to me..." attitude.
I just got my computer back from the shop. The first symptom was a processing slowdown. The second was a "...performed an illegal operation..." warning in both Outlook Express (e-mail) and Microsoft Internet Explorer (browser). For a short while, I was able to do a work-around - drag the warning block off the working area - and continue. Then, I could not do anything on these two internet programs. All non-internet programs seemed to work fine.
The fix was a compete reformatting of the hard drive with the loss of most files. This is not a virus based on it not having the usual characteristics of a virus. Anti-virus programs do not detect it. I can find nothing on the Macafee web site about it.
The lost file with the greatest impact was my address book with the names, e-mail addresses, and other related information about all you Power Wagon friends with whom I have exchanged messages. I also use the address book to send announcements of Texas Power Wagon events. I'd sure appreciate an e-mail from each of you with your name and where you are located to help me rebuild this important file. Thanks.
