It was a good motor. Not in a powerful sense but as in reliable; 7 main bearings, inline Bosch pump. I believe this motor is amenable to turbocharging and if done properly would end up with about 150 hp and 250 ft-lb. With proper gearing, like a Ranger overdrive between the motor and the 4 spd and 4.88s with 32s or 5.38s with 36s it would be pretty drivable. Even without the turbo. This type motor in diesel Landcruiser LWB hardtops and pickups does OK; curb weight ~4500, GVW 6600, sometimes loaded up to 8000 with very strong rear springs. But with super wide ratio US made 4spd and 3/4 ton full sized pickup (curb weight >5000, GVW up to 7700) it isn't so quick particularly on fast city driving and Interstates. The 1.66 jump from 3rd to 4th is too much; the Landcruiser has a 1.52 3rd, 2.64 2nd and 4.93 1st, which is usable. the 6.68 1st of the 435 is not usable. By restoring proper gearing the mtor becomes much more desirable. The US mfgs in this period used super wide gearing on their pickups and relied completely on big displacement torque in 4th to get highway power and speed.
