Does your 59 Townie had an automatioc transmission?????? They only use a lock out switch in that case. If youu have a manual transmission, then you can put a switch on the clutch that will deactivate the starter circuit unless the clutch is depressed.
As far as I am concerned the clutch based switch is more trouble than it is worth. Yes, one of my kids did turn the key and move one of my cars years ago. But that was our fault for not keeping better track of the keys. The system is really not needed if you do not have real young kids. The only reason why it is there on new cars it that the Feds require it. Your teanager should be fine without it.
