Your question is interesting to me, since I didn't get much instruction from my father in the ways of the mechanical. He was a sales rep for medical supplies. I can't remember him ever using a wrench on anything, and only one or two times with a hammer or saw. He had some ability, judging by a set of shelves he made when I was very young, he just never used it.
I don't know where I got the gift. I spent my free time in the basement making things out of wood, or in the shed fixing lawn mowers and tillers. It was what I did. One of the older neighborhood kids was big into cars and motorcycles, and I stuck to him like a barnacle, sometimes to his annoyance. He showed me how to work on lawnmower engines and later cars, and he gave me the confidence to try things I wasn't sure how to do.
Thanks Jay.
