I don't know about Bread ash causing armpits to sag but I have heard it causes extreme facial hair growth. ;)
Clint has retrofitted his toaster to run off a belt pulley anyway so no electric is used.
Seriously though, my Dad always fixed everything too. His advice is it's junk all ready so why not try. It's the self sufficient thing again I guess. I remember those words and has helped me over the years.
