It allows the body shop to give a bid and stick to it. Plus be assured of making a profit.
Of course, a slow mechanic could lose out, if it takes him 50 hours to get 30 hours of pay.
Then you have the body shop managers who double invoice- one based on the flat rate book, for the customer. And another, much fewer hours, to pay the employee.
But Sorry Mike, most mechanics do beat the flat rate book. I think my best week was about about 2:1 - I made 25/hr when my 50% rate for 40 hours would have been $12. That made up for those weeks when I only did 10 hours of work, and waxed my tool box the rest of the week. $20K gross that year, about $10/hr over the year.
