No, the tranny does not have to come out. You take off the brake pedal and bracket and you will have room to take it off. It is a heavy unit, so be carefull. The nut at the top of the PTO that holds it to the tranny is difficult to get to and requires a thin box end wrench. Make sure you take off all plugs. They hold balls/springs for the shift rail.
