I have performed rescues like this but I did not change the engine. Instead I removed the broken Connecting rod from the journal and driven the piston to the top of the bore. The piston was wedged with a wooden shim. Remove the plug wire and reinstall the pan and you have a five cyl. engine. It will run rough , but it will run.
This works with diesels as well with a few more details. I have driven the finished product about 120 miles on crappy african roads to get back to civilization. I can give you a great recipe for a cement made from termite mounds and wildebeast dung. This will seal cracks in the block where the rod went through.
