Dave,this is not related to your smoking problem,but not knowing the engine I line up tdc and then take the dist cap off and slowly turn the engine backwards while checking degrees on front pulley before the rotor moves.This tells me how "tight" the timing belt and usually the rest of the engine is. If you have a lot of slop in the timing chain it always shows up with the rotor.
