Gary, sorry to hear that, could it have been that you can not shift without a clutch because of the locker in the rear? I don't know just asking never had a locker in a truck before but seams that might have something to do with it also 2nd is pretty low and with the torque of the 4bt and the way it falls flat when you let off the throttle I can see why shifting without the clutch could be a problem. Fleabag!!
