There are many good comments so far here.
What model carb do you have? Is it a square top? If so look under the best of the forum for square top secrets.
Do not throw any parts away during your cleaning/rebuild, as you may need to have them.
Clint Dixon is very knowledgeable about the various carbs so can chime in; again it would help if you found the little tag on the carb with the i.d. #.
