My 2001 CTD 6 speed stock clutch/transmission became intermittant one week. Hard shifting. Eventually would not come out of gear with out great force then not at all. Pushing in the clutch did nothing. Next day would work. Failed three days in a row at the same place on the way home. I tried replacing the master/slave "sytem they use today. No change. It turns out two of the springs in the clutch disk assembly became un-caged and decide to get into the "works".

I suspect that the damage was done 6 months earlier. I did some hard use driving going 5 miles in 5 hours during a blizzard like storm. Was plowing snow with the bumper/grill. Had to go in and out of snow and water filled ditches to get around cars, trucks and school busses. Did a lot of hard fancy driving. Learned I need to always carry 4 mud chains for the tires.

The symptoms made no sense to me. Worked one day not the next. Fail in the same spot daily. (At the same stop sign.)

I found a trust worthy shop. They replaced clutch. They have also done my syncros twice for me. Early 6 speeds had problems!

Careful with flywheels. I had the dodge flywheel cut once and it never worked correctly again. Just enough cut to "clean it up" a little. We think we learned it had a tapper cut across the face. Put a new one in and it worked fine.

Also have had trouble with the stock flywheel being used with aftermarket clutch. I leasrned to leave things alone and stay stock!!!

Don't know if any of this aplies to your case.....

Best of luck. Have a good week end. Fall is arriving. This was the first night with temps in the 40's.
