There's always a race to declare a "state of emergency" and a "disaster area" as quickly as possible and for the slightest excuse because it's an easy way for local politicians (governors and mayors) to get "free" federal money. Pretty much anything can be an "emergency" these days, even a drought. I'm not saying Irene isn't a serious windstorm, but I agree we're going overboard with the hype on all these "disasters".
I just checked CNN and there's a "story" about a reporter who "almost" got blown over by a gust of wind. If you read about some of the hurricanes, blizzards, forest fires, and earthquakes that hit the US back in the 1800s, you realize we have no clue these days what a real disaster is.
