You need a four post solenoid to properly wire a 12v and use the ballest resistor.
From starter switch you need a wire to the "S" terminal on the solenoid
From the "I" terminal, you need a wire to the ballest side wire that goes to the coil. This is to by-pass the resistor to supply a full 12v to the coil when starting.
Everything is + to - on 12v. See PIF wiring diagrams
