With an unattended boat in the water, I think it's pretty mandatory to have a battery charger. That way, if a leak develops, the bilge pump can run continuously without running down the battery.
I was a live aboard for 15 years in a marina with 7000 boats in the water year round. Most of them had on-board battery chargers. I can't remember one fire caused by a permanently installed battery charger.
From my observations, more unattended boats take on water than catch fire.
