Yea, a good rule when buying a motor is you need to hear it run. I just got a truck with a supposed fresh 350. The carb was stuck so the guy couldn't run it for me. I ended up buying it anyway because he seemed like an honest guy. I got lucky, got it running and it was all he said it was, ran nice, the oil in the pan was even clean, so you do get lucky sometimes but you have to be real careful.
