One shop I worked at had a 'scale' on the hydraulic system of a fork lift. It was calibrated in pounds, but was basically a pressure gauge. You needed to read it on the up stroke, and also the down stroke, and average the two. Taking the average will allow for the friction in all the mechanism. So, a pressure gauge reading in pounds, will work to estimate the differences between weights of trucks. And, if you know the weight of a couple trucks, you can figure out a conversion of psi to tons. Or maybe calculate from piston diameter? A gauge off of an old oxygen regulator would suffice, lifts usually run in the 1,000-1500 psi range.
