This VM motor is much lighter than the Cummins, with about 10 mpg more than the Cummins. It actually shares some Cummins tech and Fiat Power Group works very closely with Cummins. This 3.0, along with the 2.8 is one of the few "non-disposable" small diesels out there with longevity equal to the Cummins.
In short, it's a great motor and shows the Penske touch.
