lathe help

as i get further into the hobby and other projects, having a lathe that could thread and cut metal would be a nice add to the shop. any thoughts on what to look for? would be used for general repair and machine work. i know bob stahl had a south bend in his shed that was able to clean up drive line sealing surfaces, etc. any assistance or thoughts???
