There are a lot of differences between the different model heads. Some are small, cosmetic or even unimportant (to general application). As mentioned in another post, the later the head, usually the more it was built to improve performance. Some heads allow for higher lift cams whilst still improving compression ratio. There are reference books/lists (that I don't have) that show the model to casting data, so if you post the casting number someone may be able to tell you what engine the odd head is from.
