I do not support the concept of increasing tire size to 1100x16 to get better road performance. The 900x16 tires were the largest size used in the PW engineering design/build. Going with larger tires add more stress on all parts of the front steering axle, including actual braking ability.
When we go with larger tires, we knowingly add a lot more weight to the Unsprung Mass. If you dont understand what adding weight to the Unsprung Mass equates to your performance/handling, read this, it saves me a lot of typing;

By staying with 4.89 ring and pinions in the 3rd member and using 900x16 tires, we get good roadability with the 230/251 engine and keep the Unsprung Mass as light as possible.
Further, you may if lucky, find a nice wear matched set of used 1100x16 tires. Now destroy a tire and try to find a good used tire with equivalent wear quickly and at a price you want to pay, with shipping from who knows where.
And if you do go with a Diesel, 4.89's and 900x16 tires is a nice combination. I run this combo on all my Cummins powered old iron.
