Check out the mechanical pump first, might just need a rebuild or clean out - especially after sitting a while. I had a similar problem on a toyo cruiser - non serviceable pump - so put on a new one - rocker arm broke off and fell in pan - took it back and they replaced it - after minimal running another half rocker arm in the pan - turns out faulty manufacture - thanks much - fitted electric pump inside chassis rail, no more problems for life of truck - but that dam ticking sound used to annoy me. Thing to consider is the toyo uses a return to tank system so pump is never overloaded.
