The typical modern gasket is a steel center, and the fiber on both sides, with a coating of some kind. They seem to glue themselves on. Pry bar needed to remove head, chisel needed to remove gasket material form both surfaces. I use a sharp carpenter's chisel.
As often as a copper/copper gasket goes bad, I don't mind trying something different.
Hmm, I may cut off the un-needed 'hump' and inspect for internal layers?
