... The good natured kidding aside, it breaks down like this:

The trucks were originallyu equiped with mechanical fuel pumps, which were reliable, but did require some maintenance. They also sometimes leasked, and were subject to vapor lock, which could be addressed with heat shields.

The original pumps were well made, and were intended to be rebuilt with kits when they failed.

The kits are no longer easily available.

New pumps are availeable for $80-$150, but they have been criticized as being junk, i.e. they sometimes do not last very long. There is some evidence that the components in them do not tolerate ethanol fuel mixtures, which are common in the US.

"universal" electric fuel pumps are available, and they generally work very well. They have safety concerns, which may be addressed by wiring them properly. Also, the cheap ones may (or may not) suffer premature failure. They need to be mounted close to the fuel tank, and may have priming issues if not used often enough. Proper installation requires some thought.

Electric fuel pumps are not "original" on these trucks, which is important to some, and not to others.

There is no "right" answer on the issue, it depends on what you personally prefer.
