On the M37. Thought I should try and see if I can get a little more braking action before I head over the mountain, so I pulled the right rear to try to get the adjuster to adjust, since it wouldn't turn, and found that there was no lining on one shoe, and the lining on the other fell off as soon as I touched it. Now I suspect all the shoes on that truck are falling apart. The front one that I couldn't get to back off far enough not to drag probably has fragments of disintegrating shoe stuck in it. The lack of shoes didn't do the drum a lot of good either.
Of course I can't just go to the local auto parts and pick up a set of shoes for an M37, though they did tell me they can order from for $120/axle. Does that sound right? Plan A is to see if my parts truck has good shoes and drums on it. That's over at my cabin, which means no air tools, and I can't get to it until either the snow melts or I get this M37 drivable. If those shoes are bad, I guess plan B is to get them re-lined, or try to re-line them myself since I have a roll of old asbestos brake lining and this truck will never go on the highway. If I can get some good lining on the shoes, that will be good enough. I won't worry about getting the drums turned or the shoes arced. For now I'm going to try just plugging off the right rear (wish it was a front not a rear that was bad) and driving over the hill with it like it is, trying my best to never touch the brakes, which means not trying to do a 3 to 2 downshift on the downhill side and not meeting anyone else on the road. At least the hand brake works pretty well.
