My '52 has a Midland vacuum brake booster plumbed in back under the left frame rail. It makes a significant difference as to how much pedal pressure is needed to stop.
I drove a flatfender PW without power brakes once and I really had to "stand" on the brake in comparison.
My truck stops very well with the power brakes. I also had my brake shoes "arced" to match the drums, and I feel that helps to ensure full shoe contact and thus stopping ability.
